Parthenium Mare

PARTHE´NIUM MARE (Παρθενικὸν πέλαγος, Greg. Naz. Or. xix.), the eastern part of the Mare Internum, between Egypt and Cyprus. (Ammian. 14.8.10: from which writer it also appears that it was sometimes called the Issiac Sea--a, vespera (Aegyptus) Issiaco disjungitur mari, quod quidam nominavere Parthenium,2 2.15.2.)

(τὸ Παρθενικον πέλαγος). The southeastern part of the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Cyprus (Ammian. Marc. xiv. 8, 10).
